Greetings!
This issue of CHIPS bolsters awareness for the Department of the Navy’s cybersecurity campaign which launched last year and is led by the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Dominance (OPNAV N2/N6), in coordination with the Navy Chief of Information (CHINFO), Navy Cybersecurity Division, U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet and Navy Information Forces.
The goal of the campaign is to promote observance of cybersecurity policies, directives, and best practices. The Navy is executing a comprehensive, well-coordinated plan to address its cybersecurity challenges, but users are a critical component of protecting Navy networks.
Cyber intrusions are increasingly easier and cheaper to achieve, and U.S. adversaries are more audacious, more sophisticated and better funded than ever.
As Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Dominance, Vice Adm. Ted Branch, wrote at the launch of the cybersecurity campaign: “If you log on to any Navy network, via desktop, laptop, smartphone, tablet, etc., you are in the cyber battlespace and are directly vulnerable to attack.”
Each individual who logs on to a DON network has a responsibility to be knowledgeable about the cyber threat and to practice good cyber hygiene.
I sincerely thank each of the organizations and individuals that contributed to this issue: OPNAV N2/N6, the DON Chief Information Officer, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, SPAWAR Systems Centers Atlantic and Pacific, Naval Air Systems Command, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Center for Surface Combat Systems, Director Naval OPSEC Support Team, Navy Information Forces, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Far East, Detachment Diego Garcia; NCTAMS LANT Det Rota, the Information Professional officers who provided their insight; Rear Adm. Danelle Barrett, Deputy Director of Current Operations, U.S. Cyber Command; and Brig. Gen. Dennis A. Crall, Director – Command, Control, Communications, Computers (C4), Headquarters Marine Corps/CIO of the Marine Corps.
Putting together this issue of CHIPS has truly been on all hands on deck effort! Please do your part to protect and defend DON networks and your personal social media accounts — be cyber safe.
