Below is a list of frequently asked questions on laptop and portable devices.
Why do mobile devices containing electronic files with 25 or more PII records have to be encrypted?
The DON CIO used the number 25 as it is usually larger than the average Command/Unit Recall Roster. Files with more than 25 PII records must be encrypted using WIN ZIP or other FIPS 140-2 compliant encryption software.
When will the DON data at rest full disc encryption software be available?
Originally, only laptops and mobile devices required data at rest encryption. The DON expanded the requirement to both desktops and mobile devices. It is estimated that the software will be pushed to all NMCI users between May and September 2009. Other networks will follow after a contract award is made (estimated January 2009) and when funds become available.
