Raw Data Logs
Information is collected from the Department of the Navy Chief Information Officer
website log files for statistical purposes. Below is an example of the information
collected based on a standard request for a World Wide Web document:
2012-03-25 13:52:54 140.100.189.10 - GET/calendar.htm - 200 906 398 265 80 Mozilla
5.0+/intranet.beaufort.usmc.mil
This typical log entry is decomposed into the following information:
2001-01-03 13:52:54 -- The date and time of the request.
140.100.189.10 -- The host name (or IP address) associated with
the requestor (you as the visitor). Depending on the requester’s method of network
connection, the host name (or IP address) may or may not identify a specific computer.
Connections via many Internet Service Providers assign different IP addresses for
each session, so the host name identifies only the ISP. The host name (or IP address)
will identify a specific computer if that computer has a fixed IP address.
GET -- The ‘HTTP Method’ used to access the page.
/calendar.htm -- The page that the user has requested from the
Department of the Navy Chief Information Officer’s website.
200 –- The Status code. Every page request from a web server results
in a standard W3C status code being generated.
906 -- The number of bytes sent from the server to the browser.
398 -- The number of bytes received by the server FROM the browser.
265 -- The Time taken to transfer the request to the user, in milliseconds.
Mozilla 5.0 -- The type of browser software used to access the
page.
intranet.beaufort.usmc.mil -- The referring page from which the
visitor clicked to get to the current page. This is used to determine how people
find the Department of the Navy Chief Information Officer 's website.
