Dr. Robert Lutwak joined the Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) in September 2013 as a Program Manager for the miniature position, navigation, and timing (PNT) technology portfolio. His primary field of interest is the development of compact low-cost components and systems providing “PNT everywhere” for increased battlefield awareness and cooperative engagement.
Prior to joining DARPA, Dr. Lutwak served as Chief Scientist for Symmetricom Corporation’s atomic clock technology, developing advanced timing systems for DoD, aerospace, and telecommunications applications. In this role, as Principal Investigator on the DARPA-MTO Chip-Scale Atomic Clock (CSAC) program, Dr. Lutwak developed the first deployable CSAC, which provides atomic quality timing to portable battery-powered applications in PNT, remote sensing, and troop protection. Dr. Lutwak has also contributed to other tactical and strategic DoD timing systems, including the GPS space and user segments, F-22 and F-35 command and control, and the DoD master clock, and has served as Principal Investigator on additional research and development programs sponsored by DARPA, Office of Naval Research (ONR), U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), GPS-wing, and the U.S. Army.
Dr. Lutwak received his Bachelor of Science in Physics, summa cum laude, from Miami University in 1988 and his Ph.D. in Atomic and Optical Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997.
