North Texas Offers A Rich, Full Campus Life For Mean Green Student-Athletes

The University of North Texas, the 26th largest university in the nation with approximately 36,000 students, is located in Denton, Texas, a city of over 110,000 population situated thirty minutes north of Dallas and Fort Worth and recently named the Best Small Town in America by Rand McNally and USA TODAY.
Historically known as an arts, music, and education school, North Texas has continued that tradition but has also increased its influence in research, sciences, engineering, and business. UNT recently built an 87,000-square-foot Life Sciences building that includes 24,000-square feet of research labs, as well as the 180,000-square foot Business Leadership Complex. North Texas has over one hundred majors available.
The beautifully landscaped, tree-filled 900-acre campus features award-winning architecture that has drawn film crews to Denton to shoot movies, television shows, and commercials.
Activities
North Texas has more than three hundred student organizations, including thirty sororities and fraternities.
The University Union, which will soon be undergoing a major renovation and expansion, has long hosted film festivals, concerts, art exhibitions, and guest lectures by renowned writers, artists, and cultural figures. The Union also offers table tennis and pool in the Union Syndicate.
The 138,000-square-foot Pohl Recreation Center offers a range of workout equipment, as well as new adventures through its outdoor pursuits program. North Texas also has a full recreational-sports program, with club teams in baseball, bowling, cycling, dodgeball, fencing, ice hockey, in-line hockey, indoor soccer, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, ultimate disc, volleyball, paintball, running, sailing, swimming, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, wakeboarding, and wrestling.

Music
North Texas is one of the top music schools in the world, and as such is a mecca for student and guest musicians who perform in clubs and festivals throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It boasts one of the great concert halls in the Murchison Performing Arts Center and its centerpiece, the Winspear Concert Hall.
Jazz is an integral part of North Texas, which is renowned for its jazz program. North Texas lab bands are among the greatest student bands in the world, headlined by the One O'Clock Lab Band which has received multiple Grammy nominations and is the first and only student band in the world to be nominated by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The campus radio station, KNTU 88.1 FM, plays this uniquely American form of music.
Among the guest musicians who have performed and/or lectured at North Texas are Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Maynard Ferguson, Harry Connick, Jr., Wynton Marsalis, and Tom Scott. North Texas alumni include Don Henley, Norah Jones, Eli Young Band, Sara Hickman, Lou Marini, Tom Malone, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Lyle Mays, Roy Orbison, Emily Pulley, Patricia Racette, and the Grammy-winning band Brave Combo.
Housing and Dining
North Texas's housing has thirteen dorms, including several newer halls, residences for new students or for upper classmen, and residences for specific academic communities such as music students, honors program students, and athletes. There are also ample housing opportunities just off campus with easy access to classrooms.

There are five dining halls on campus, including the nationally recognized health-conscious Mean Greens Café, the nation’s first full vegan university cafeteria. North Texas has numerous other dining options on campus, including several restaurants in the University Union and at Discovery Park. There are also a wide variety of restaurants near campus.
Sports
But the college experience is incomplete without sports, and North Texas has dramatically upgraded its facilities in the past decade, including Lovelace Stadium for softball, Mean Green Soccer Stadium, the North Texas Volleyball Center, Waranch Tennis Complex, and the recently-completed Apogee Stadium football facility, designed and built by the same people responsible for the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. The Super Pit, the venue for North Texas men's and women's basketball, is one of the finest facilities in the southwest and has twice hosted the NCAA Basketball Tournament. On the horizon, North Texas has plans to build a new track and field facility and a baseball stadium.
