Mean Green

What is the Mean Green? Simply, it's one of the most unusual nicknames in college athletics, and we are proud to note that it's been around North Texas for more than 40 years. What initially started in the 1960s as a moniker for the defensive unit on the North Texas football team -- inspired by the squad's standout defensive end from 1966-68, NFL Hall of Famer Joe Greene -- it has since evolved into the school's accepted name for nearly all of its athletic programs.

It's who and what we are today. Sure, our mascot is still Scrappy, representing the eagle mascot selected by North Texas students in 1922. But while there are hundreds of teams named the Eagles around the country, there is only one Mean Green...the North Texas MEAN GREEN!
