A Strategic Base in Paradise
Navy Region Hawaii oversees the U.S. Navy's largest and most strategic island base in the Pacific. The Navy region extends over 23,000 acres of land and water on Oahu and Kauai and serves as the host for the headquarters of seven major Navy commands, including the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Under the command of Commander, U. S. Pacific Fleet, Commander, Navy Region (COMNAVREG) Hawaii is the regional coordinator for all shore-based naval personnel and shore activities located in Hawaii as well as Midway Island, Kure Island and the islands of Wake, Johnston, Palmyhra and Kingman Reef. This overall responsibility involves a land and water area of some 59,516 acres.
The most important mission of COMNAVREG is coordinating the Navy's local support of the Pacific Fleet. This support involves port and housekeeping services for 29 surface ships and submarines homeported in Pearl Harbor, and more than 60 shore commands and activities.
These services extend to our transiting fleet units as well as many ships of friendly allied navies which rely on our support when they visit Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. During a major fleet exercise such as the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC), the logistic support for more than 75 ships is coordinated by COMNAVREG in a team effort with local commands.
Other major commands within Navy Region Hawaii are Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station, Pacific and Commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific.
Since the late 1800's, Hawaii has played an important role in America's strategic defense. It is home to the Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, which geographically is the largest of the eight unified/specified U.S. commands. It is the nerve center of our Pacific defense.
Following tourism, the military is most important to Hawaii's economy, contributing more than $4.6 billion a year* and employing 27,000 civilians. There are more than 55,000 active duty military personnel on the islands, 65,000 family members and 10,000 National Guard and reservists. Also among Hawaii's military population are 13,000 retirees and 101,000 veterans receiving more than $55 billion yearly in disability and pension payments.
Headquarters at Makalapa (next to Pearl Harbor) is the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, the Naval component who reports to Commander, U.S. Pacific Command. PACFLT is the largest naval command in the world, responsible for 102 million square miles of ocean, nearly 200 ships, 1,700 aircraft and more than 225,000 Sailors and Marines.
Two major fleets make up their forces, the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific and Third Fleet in the Eastern and Mid Pacific, along with major Naval bases on the mainland's West Coast, in Hawaii, and in Japan.
