Mean Green Tennis Splits Up; Completes Pair Of Tournaments

Denton, Texas (10/4/09) - North Texas Tennis wrapped up a busy weekend, with athletes at two different tournaments, on Sunday evening.

Sophomore Irina Paraschiv and Junior Madura Ranganathan competed at the ITA All-American on the campus of UCLA on Friday, while the rest of the team was at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational.

Paraschiv started the All-American well, defeating Utah's Anastasia Putilina in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 before falling in her third match of the day, second in singles, to UNLV's Kristina Nedeltcheva 7-5, 6-3.

"Irina came out in her first match and played very well," North Texas head coach Sujay Lama said. "Coming out to California and playing against some of the best players in the country is a learning experience, and something that I think both Irina and Madura will be able to draw off of for the rest of the season."

Ranganathan and Paraschiv teamed up for a doubles match against UCLA's Montez and Pantic, but could not overcome a slow start and fell 8-3.

The Mean Green had five other student-athletes in action in Lafayette, La., including the doubles tandem of Catalina Cruz and Shannon Mackenzie.

Cruz and Mackenzie went 2-0 on Friday, before falling in the third round Saturday afternoon 9-8 to conference foes Marovich and Mazinova of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Cruz, who was playing up a couple of slots in singles in the absence of Paraschiv and Ranagathan, reached the consolation finals.

"Overall, we did well considering the fact that all of our layers played up and competed against strong competition," assistant coach Jeff Maren said. "Catalina Cruz did a great job playing up a level in the A draw, reaching the back draw singles finals and then the semi-finals of doubles with Shannon."

The Mean Green is back in action Oct. 16 at the ITA Texas Regional in Waco, Texas.
