LUBBOCK, Texas (9/30/05) -- All six North Texas women’s tennis players competing at the Scarborough Specialties Open picked up at least one victory on the tournament’s opening day, including Katherine Harris and Sammie Moreton who went undefeated to advance to Saturday’s Flight C semifinal matches.

For the second straight tournament, the Mean Green saw two players advance as far as at least the semifinals. Ina Wieding and Aziza Aba Butain both made it to the semifinals at the Mean Green Invitational last weekend in Denton.

Harris went 2-0 with straight-set victories over Air Force’s Megan Kiser and Texas Tech’s Erin Hunter. Moreton received a bye in the round of 16 before defeating UTEP’s Sandra Spirta by scores of 6-2, 4-6, 10-6. Harris will play Anne-Sophie Fankam of Texas Tech and Moreton will face Texas State’s Sumarie Muller in tomorrow’s semifinals.

Wieding, Aba Butain and Megan Schmulbach all won their first round matches in either Flight A or B, but dropped their quarterfinal contests. Lynley Wasson dropped her first match in Flight A before rebounding to win her quarterfinals match in the consolation bracket. All six Mean Green players will compete in at least one match on Saturday.

The Mean Green also got victories from two of its three doubles teams playing at the tournament. All three teams are competing in Flight Red and played just one match on Friday. Moreton and Schmulbach won their match 9-7, while Aba Butain and Harris picked up an 8-2 win. Both teams will compete in the flight’s quarterfinals tomorrow.

The tournament is set to resume play Saturday at 8 a.m.
