Day One Complete At Mean Green Invitational

DENTON, Texas (9/12/08) - The North Texas tennis team could not have asked for much more from day one of the Mean Green Invitational. The Mean Green won all but one of their matches, advancing to the semifinals in all but one of their brackets.

The highlight of the day was junior Catalina Cruz's singles win over No.1 seed, Texas Tech's Samantha VanderDrift.

Catalina was down by a set and trailed in the second, but then the comeback began as she fought off five match points.

"I stayed relaxed out there," said Cruz. "I told myself to just have fun, don't get frustrated, and see what happens."

Cruz was victorious 2-6, 7-6, 1-0. The win put Cruz into the semifinals where she will face Monika Hadvigerova of UT-Arlington.

"I expected great effort, fight, and spirit, and that's exactly what we got," said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. "We gutted out a lot of wins. I couldn't have asked for a better day."

All match play for Saturday has been canceled due to the possible weather. This includes no indoor play as well. The Invitational should continue on Sunday. Check back for further updates at www.meangreensports.com.
