SMU Series History North Texas is 0-9 against SMU, having been unable to top the Mustangs, who are perennial C-USA title contenders and consistently ranked in the top 15 nationally. The Mean Green lost 143-96 last season at SMU’s Perkins Natatorium. SMU won the North Texas Relays earlier this season, where the Mustangs and Mean Green competed against each other and three other schools.
Rarefied Air The meet two weeks ago at Las Cruces, N.M., took place at 3896 feet above sea level. Due to the altitude, all races of 200 yards or more had a time adjustment. For races of 200 yards, 0.5 seconds are subtracted, 2.5 seconds for 400 or 500 yard races, and 6.3 seconds from the 1000.
NMSU, Boise State Recap LAS CRUCES, N.M.- Dawn Richerson and Rosa Gentile won events against Boise State and New Mexico, as North Texas fell to Boise State 177-66 and to New Mexico State 160-83.
“I was very pleased with how our team responded today,” said North Texas Head Coach Joe Dykstra. “We were more competitive today. The conditions were very tough, being at altitude, swimming outside in windy conditions. We will learn from this and this will improve our team.”
Dawn Richerson won the 1,000 yard freestyle with a North Texas season-best time of 10:27.28 (10:33.58 raw).
Rosa Gentile won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.50, edging Stevie Hughey of Boise State. Gentile also set a season-best with a 57.18 in the 100-yard Butterfly.
Delia Covo and Rebecca Taylor finished 1-2 against Boise State in the 3-meter diving, posting scores of 218.15 and 203.95 respectively. Covo and Taylor finished 2nd and 4th against New Mexico State.
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Against Arkansas and Tulane, Delia Covo posted the second-best 3 meter diving score in school history, at 259.20, just off her own school record of 262.13. Freshman Rebecca Taylor added her name to the record books right away, with a 254.00 score, making her the second-best performer in school history, behind only Covo, and gave her the fifth-best score in program history.
All-Conference North Texas had a program-record 29 All-Conference selections in 2010, shattering the previous mark of 16 from 2008.
Deep In The Heart Of Texas North Texas now only competes once more outside of Texas. The Mean Green stay in-state to compete in the Texas Invitational (Austin), dual meets against Houston and Rice (Houston), the Sun Belt Championships (Rockwall) and the NCAA Championships (Austin).
Contrast In Makeup Even though North Texas and SMU are separated by just 41 miles, the makeup of the respective teams are vastly different. North Texas has 24 swimmers from the state of Texas, while SMU has just six. SMU has ten international athletes, while NT has just four.
