Mean Green Finish Trailing Cougars, 126-104

HOUSTON (10/22/05) - Twenty top three finishes weren't enough for the North Texas women’s swimming and diving team to pull out a victory over long-time foe, Houston, as the Mean Green fell to the Cougars 126-104 on Saturday, Oct. 22 in Houston.

This is the eleventh meeting between the two teams since 1998. The series now stands 11-0 in Houston’s favor.

The Mean Green was led by junior Gwen Rourke and sophomore Bonnie Garcia-Meitin, as both women took home top three finishes in all of their events.

Rourke finished second in the 200 IM with the time 2:14.05, and placed first in the 200 Breaststroke (2:24.46). Garcia-Meitin finished second in both the 50 Freestyle (25.01) and 200 Backstroke (2:10.92).

Rourke and Garcia-Meitin competed in the 200 Medley relay along with junior Emilia Tudose and sophomore Angelica Gentile bringing home a second place finish for the Mean Green with the time 1:52.72.

Tudose and Gentile also put in their individual contributions to the team’s final score. Tudose finished second in the 100 freestyle with the time 55:35, which stands two seconds from the current NT record. Gentile finished second in the 200 Butterfly (2:11.97), followed by freshman Alesha Olesen with the time 2:13.46.

Junior Jaime Hosner continues to be a force for the Mean Green in the distance events, as she captured third in the 500 (5:25.10) and 1000 (11:03.29) Freestyle.

Freshman Lauren Liston looks to become a major player for the Mean Green in her first season. Liston took home second place finishes in the 200 (1:59.53) and 500 Freestyle (5:16.13).

The Mean Green will stay in Houston after finishing competition with the Cougars to face the Rice Owls Sunday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m.
