Mean Green Completes SBC Championships With 12 Season-Best Times

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (2/14/04) The North Texas women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up an outstanding performance at the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Saturday, finishing the meet with three new school records and season-best times or scores in 13 events.

The Mean Green picked up 10 top-five finishes over the three-day competition, including its first ever individual event championship at the meet.  Bethany Pipes, who scored a team-high 49 points, won the 200 Backstroke with a school-record time of 2:04.44 on the final day of action.

Pipes also set the school record in the school record in the 500 Freestyle (5:04.21) on Thursday, while Jaime Hosner swam a school-record time in the 1650 Freestyle (17:29.14) on Saturday.  Not only did North Texas set school-record times in three events, it also had the program’s second fastest times ever in five more events.  Hosner, Pipes and Emila Tudose accounted for three of those times, while the other two came in relay events.

North Texas finished fifth, just two points behind Florida International.  The Mean Green edged Louisiana-Monroe by 61 points and host Arkansas-Little Rock by 183 points.  Western Kentucky claimed its fourth consecutive Sun Belt Conference title with a score of 968, while Denver finished second with 600 points and New Mexico State third with 493.

Following Pipes as NT’s top scorers were Tudose with 36 points and Hosner with 34.  The Mean Green recorded 14 top-five times in school history.
