Feb. 25, 2014

ATLANTA, Ga. - North Texas competes in its first Conference USA Swimming & Diving Championship on Wednesday, Feb. 26, through Saturday, Mar. 1, at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center, in Atlanta, Ga.

“I am excited to finally be a in a position to see where we stack up against school’s in C-USA,” said head coach Brendon Bray. “Besides Tulane and Rice, we haven’t gotten to see most of the teams that we will be competing against, but, at the end of the year, we have tremendous confidence racing teams in our league, and I think that will make us perform better.”

C-USA foes include women’s teams from East Carolina, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, Old Dominion, Tulane and defending 2013 champion Rice. The three-and-a-half-day event begins each day with the preliminaries at 9 a.m. CT and finals at 5 p.m. Saturday's final session will be televised on FOX Sports 1.

“We have geared everything we have done to be competitive at this meet at the end of the year, and I see this as a tremendous opportunity to get best times,” Bray said.  “Our goal is to make the prelim heats our final in order to get the best potential placing as we can.”

The Mean Green holds several of the fastest times in the conference going into the event. Sophomore Jana Burkard is the top seed in the 1650 freestyle, and junior Mona Groteguth has the fastest time in the conference in the 100 backstroke at 54.02.

“It is as important for the swimmers who make up our depth to battle for placing as it is for our top,” Bray said. “Final team placing will be dependent on the whole team performing together as a group and not just two or three swimmers performing well.”
