Texas Voter ID Law

Texas law requires that voters present a valid form of identification when voting. A valid form of ID includes: 

• Texas driver license issued by the Department of Public Safety
• Texas election ID certificate
• Texas personal ID card 
• Texas license to carry a handgun that includes a photograph and address
• U.S. military ID card with your photograph and address
• U.S. citizenship certificate containing your photograph (does not need to be current) 
• U.S. passport 

If you don't have one of these forms of ID, you still have options when you show up at the polls.

Early Voting

The lines on Election Day can be long and inconvenient. Fortunately, voting in Denton is as easy as a walk to class. You can now vote at the UNT Gateway Center any time during the early voting period. 

You can vote early in any of the designated Early Voting Locations. 

Early voting will take place at the following dates and times: 

• Monday - Friday, October 24 - 28: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. 
• Saturday, October 29: 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. 
• Sunday, October 30: 1 p.m. - 6 p.m.
• Monday-Friday: October 31 - November 4: 7 a.m. -  7 p.m. 

If you are voting in the City of Denton, the following places are the closest to UNT's campus to vote early: 

• UNT Gateway Center (across the street from the Murchison Performing Arts Center) at 801 North Texas Boulevard.
• The Denton Civic Center located at 321 E. McKinney Street.
• The Denton County Elections Administration at 701 Kimberly Drive (off Loop 288).

If you are registered somewhere else and you want to vote in your home county, learn more about absentee voting.

Voter Registration Information

Before you can cast your ballot, you need to register to vote. The deadline to register is October 11.

To register to vote, you must: 

• Be a U.S. citizen. 
• Be at least 17 and 10 months old, and you must turn 18 by November 8 
• Live at a Texas address (your dorm or Denton apartment counts!) 
• Not serving a sentence (including probation or parole) for a felony conviction. 
• Not currently judged incompetent by a court. 

You don't need to present an ID to the registrar when you register. You need to provide a Driver's License ID number or the last 4 digits of your Social Security number, but if you don't have those available, you can just indicate it on the form and you will need to present one of the seven forms of valid ID when you go to vote.

If you are registered to vote in another Texas county but would like to register in Denton, you need to indicate your address change on your voter registration form.
