Academic advising is available for all admitted undergraduate students as they plan for the future and work toward degree completion.  Advisors can provide guidance in areas such as:

  • Academic Planning
  • Course Selection
  • Major Exploration
  • Major & Degree Requirements
  • Dropping/Adding Classes
  • Setting up your Degree Plan
  • Registration
  • Campus Resource Referral

Required Advising

It is university policy that new students and those recently transferred who have not completed at least two semesters at UNT Dallas will have an "Advising Required" hold on their account. Students who are on academic probation will also have an "Advising Required" hold on their account. Any student with an "Advising Required" or "TSI not complete" hold in his/her student center is required to make an appointment to meet with an academic advisor prior to registration. This is to advise students on selecting the best possible courses to ensure academic success. We also answer students' questions in the areas listed above and direct them to the appropriate departments or staff/faculty members to address their issues.  Upon successful completion of the appointment, the student will receive an "Advising Code" from their advisor which they can use to remove the hold when they register for classes.

Preparing for your Advising Appointment

To prepare for your advising appointment:

  1. Review your major degree planning sheet.  These were given to you during orientation.
  2. Review future course offerings. (The Spring 2015 schedule should be viewable by October 15).
  3. Run your interactive degree audit to become familiar with your GPA and remaining degree requirements.  If you have never run your degree audit, your advisor will demonstrate the process during your first appointment.
  4. Write down any questions you have for your academic advisor.

Appointment Policies

  • Advisors are available by appointment from 8am-5pm to assist students with their academic and career planning needs.
  • Appointments are not made for the same day.  Walk-in advising is available for returning students but during the summer, you may have to wait to speak to an advisor in between scheduled appointments.
  • Appointments may be scheduled for 30 or 60 minutes, depending on availability during the semester. However, you may schedule additional appointments as needed.
  • If you are more than 10 minutes late to your advising appointment, you may be asked to reschedule your appointment.
