What is a degree in Biology?

Biology is a scientific study of the living world that leads to careers in education, health, environmental science, forensic biology, scientific journalism, and research. Studies in biology give us a way to understand nature and the interconnectedness of all living things. This field is important to everyday life because it allows us to better understand ourselves, our natural resources, and the potential threats that would alter, damage, or destroy our environment.

Why study at UNT Dallas?

The UNTD biology program takes a dual approach--preparing students to enter professional training in the health field (B.S.) or to go into education, journalism, environmental management, and research (B.A.). Depending on their skills and interests, UNTD biology majors can take a generalist liberal arts route (B.A.) or pursue a professional, science-based degree leading to a career in the health professions (pharmacy, dentistry, physician assistant, veterinary, and medical sciences) with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

How likely am I to get a job after graduation?

The prognosis for employment for graduates holding the B.A. in biology is very promising. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment growth of medical and clinical laboratory technologists and technicians to be “much faster than average” with 22% growth predicted by 2022; environmental technicians to be “faster than average” at 19% growth by 2022; and biological technicians to be “as fast as average,” increasing by 10% from 2012 to 2020. The growth of secondary biology teachers is predicted to be 6% by 2022. The future job market for students holding a B.S. degree in biology is even more encouraging. The BLS projects employment growth of pharmacists to be “as fast as average” at 14%; genetics counselors to be “much faster than average” at 41%; physicians to be “faster than average” at 18%; physician assistants to be “much faster than average” at 38%; and optometrists to be “much faster than average” at 24%.
