Our Goal Relating to Cost

A core goal of the UNT Dallas College of Law is keeping tuition and student debt low for all students to the extent consistent with meeting its educational goals. The organized bar and legal educators agree that the cost of legal education poses concerns for the profession and for legal education. High costs and debt loads reduce access to legal education, are often spread unevenly in relation to financial need, and shrink the horizon of opportunity.

The UNT Dallas College of Law has a unique opportunity to respond to these challenges. We will not do this by reducing quality or taking short cuts. Rather, we will keep tuition low by focusing on excellence in our educational mission and by not incurring costs that are not critical to that mission.

Financing legal education: In general

The UNT Dallas College of Law encourages all applicants to learn as much as possible about the cost and financing of legal education. An excellent place to start is the information provided by the Law School Admission Council.

To understand cost and financing of law school, the following topics and terms are important.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees represent the charges and fees for the program of legal education. The total for tuition and fees for the UNT Dallas College of Law is shown on other web pages.

Living Expenses and Other Educational Expenses

In addition to tuition and fees, students in any program—law school or otherwise—incur living expenses and some education-related expenses not covered in tuition and fees. Living expenses include items such as housing, food, clothing, and transportation. Education-related expenses include books and other supplies.

Cost of Attendance

For any given student, his or her total cost of attending law school includes the tuition and fees that the student pays, plus the student’s expenses (living and education-related expenses). All law schools provide a statement of “Cost of Attendance” (COA). This statement is the school’s estimate of the total cost of attendance (tuition, fees, living expenses) for the period of enrollment. Schools provide a statement of COA for two reasons. First, even if a student is not receiving any financial assistance such as loans, a student can make use of the COA in estimating and budgeting costs for law school. Second, governmental and private loans are based, among other things, on the COA.

The COA for UNT Dallas College of Law includes required costs such as tuition, fees, books, and supplies. COA also includes allowances for living expenses such as room, board, transportation, loan origination fees, and personal expenses. The COA is determined by the most accurate and up to date information available at the time COA is determined; some actual costs might be less than or more than the listed amount.
