Our Campus Location

The history of UNT Dallas College of Law may be just beginning, but our location is rich in heritage. Renovations on the first campus building are complete and expansion plans for the historic Municipal Building are in planning stages.

Our Historic Location

The building in which the College of Law is located started as the Titche-Goettinger department store. Located at the corner of Main and Harwood and facing the Main Street Garden Park, the building is part of the Harwood Historic District in downtown and also is a designated part of the larger Downtown Dallas Historic District. At the end of the 19th century, Harwood Street marked the eastern outskirts of Dallas, still a frontier town. After the turn of the century, the area became a retail and government center, as the City of Dallas relocated its City Hall to the new Municipal Building, immediately to the south and east of the Titche-Goettinger building.

Our Renovations

The UNT System Building completed final stages of a $29 million renovation aimed primarily at modifying it to serve as the home of the UNT Dallas College of Law. The fully renovated spaces include the lobby, Office of Admissions, and Office of Registrar (first floor); faculty offices, adjunct faculty offices, student organization rooms (second floor); classrooms (third and fourth floors); classrooms, courtroom, Dean’s suite, student areas (fifth floor); and the law library (sixth floor). The renovations reflect a priority on collaborative learning spaces, best teaching and learning technologies, and modern yet welcoming design and furnishings.

The College of Law occupies more than 52,000 square feet of dedicated space and shares an additional 70,600 square feet with others; the law school uses the shared classrooms and other shared facilities during the day.

Our Plans to Expand

Future plans for the UNT Dallas College of Law include expansion to the historic Municipal Building, which sits catty-corner to the UNT System Building, making UNT Dallas College of Law a two-building campus. The Municipal Building is a granite and limestone Beaux Arts structure built in 1914. After serving as Dallas’s City Hall until 1978, the building then housed the Dallas Police headquarters until 2005. The entire world became aware of this building in 1963. Two days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald in the building’s basement.

The City Council of Dallas has expressed its commitment to provide the Municipal Building to serve as the future home of the UNT Dallas College of Law; the City also has expressed commitment to $16 million in renovation. Final terms and definitive documents for the City’s capital investment and facility agreement will require approval from the City Council and from the University of North Texas Board of Regents.

The Municipal Building's 100th Birthday was celebrated in October 2014.
