Dr. Michael Williams was named President of the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) in July 2013. He previously served on the UNT System Board of Regents, a position he held for 15 months and relinquished prior to being named Interim President of UNTHSC in December 2012.
He is a Fort Worth native and as a 1981 graduate of the UNTHSC, is the first alumnus to lead the 44-year old institution. UNT Health Science Center is comprised of five separate schools of study: the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Public Health, the School of Health Professions and the UNT System College of Pharmacy.
He practiced anesthesiology and critical care medicine in Dallas and Fredericksburg, Texas, for over twenty years. Then, from 2008 to 2012, he served as CEO of Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg. Under his leadership, the hospital received numerous awards for quality, including: the Malcolm Baldrige National Best Practice for Leadership 2013; Top 10 Finalist for the 2013 Malcolm Baldrige National Presidential Quality Award; and designation as a Truven Top 100 U.S. Hospital in 2012 and 2013.
Dr. Williams earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas Wesleyan University. Following the completion of two medical degrees (DO and MD), he completed residency and fellowship training in anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School/Parkland Hospital and the Texas Heart Institute. He has completed a Master of Business Administration from Duke University and a Master’s degree in Health Care Management from Harvard University.
Dr. Williams is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in both anesthesiology and critical care medicine. He is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a past vice president of the Fredericksburg Independent School District Board of Trustees. Currently, he serves on the Texas Wesleyan University Board of Trustees and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Board. In 2013, Dr. Williams was named to the U.S. News and World Report’s Advisory Council for the Hospital of Tomorrow and remains an active member.
