Dr. Iftekhar Amin, assistant professor of Counseling and Human Services and Coordinator of Gerontology Certificate program, recently received an American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) grant award totaling $5,000. The grant will fund research to identify the age-friendly community features that are perceived important to the Hispanic older adults residing in Dallas County as well as to identify the availability of and needs for those features in their communities. This research will result in generating new knowledge on built and social environment that are important to improve livability of Hispanic communities for people 50+ and their families.

“This research is a great start to developing useful, local knowledge,” Dr. Amin said. “It is extremely important as it would help understand Hispanic seniors’ livability in the communities surrounding the DFW area. The findings are expected to help local leaders prepare and ultimately change their communities to become great places for everyone to live.”
