Waivers and Exemptions

TUITION AND FEE WAIVERS

Several exemptions and waivers are available to qualifying students. Brief descriptions of these are listed below. Waivers must be requested during the term in which the student is registered. Such requests must be made prior to the 12th class day in fall and spring semesters and the 4th class day in summer sessions. Requests for retroactive refunds cannot be honored.

EXEMPTIONS AND WAIVERS:

  1. Hazlewood Exemption – Certain Texas veterans and dependents of deceased Texas veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States are exempt from payment of tuition. Hazlewood State application and other documents are required. This exemption pays all tuition and fees except for the Student Service Fee and Property Deposit. The student must pay the Student Service Fee each term.
  2. Dependent of Texas Veteran Killed or Missing in Action Exemption – Certain orphans of members of the Armed Forces, Texas National Guard and Texas Air National Guard are exempt from payment of tuition. Documentation is required. This exemption pays all tuition and fees.
  3. Deaf Blind Waiver – Deaf or blind Texas residents are exempt from payment of tuition. The Deaf Blind Waiver official letter is required. This exemption pays all tuition and fees.
  4. Dependent of Disabled State Employee Exemption – Children of disabled or deceased firemen, volunteer law enforcement officers, peace officers, employees of the Texas Department of Corrections and game wardens are exempt from the payment of tuition. The Dependent of Disabled State Employee Exemption official letter is required. This exemption pays all tuition and fees.
  5. POW-MIA Dependent Exemption – Children of U.S. prisoners of war or persons missing in action are granted exemption of tuition. Documentation is required. This exemption pays all tuition and fees.
  6. Military Waiver – Resident rather than non-resident tuition is applied to U.S. military personnel, their spouses and dependents if they meet designated criteria. The certificate must be approved and submitted by the Registrar prior to registration. This waiver waives out of state tuition. The student pays in-state tuition rates.
  7. Waiver for College Faculty and their Dependents – Resident rather than non-resident tuition is applied to teachers and professors of Texas state institutions of higher education, their spouses and children. Requires official application approved by hiring department. This waiver does not waive total tuition, but out of state tuition. The student pays in-state tuition rates.
  8. Research Assistants and Teaching Assistants Waiver – Resident rather than non-resident tuition is applied to a teaching or research assistant, and his/her spouse and children, provided the student is employed at least one-half time by a public institution of higher education in Texas in a position related to his/her degree program under the rules and regulations established by the employer institution. Requires official application approved by hiring department. This waiver waives out of state tuition. The student pays in-state tuition rates.
  9. Economic Development and Diversification Waiver – Resident rather than non-resident tuition is applied to individuals and dependents relocating to Texas as part of the program of state economic development and diversification.   10. Adoption Exemption – Certain Texas residents who have been adopted (who required adoption assistance) and were formerly in foster or other residential care are exempt from the payment of tuition and mandatory fees. A copy of official letter is required. This exemption pays all tuition and fees.
