DENTON - The North Texas women's basketball team fought back from a 12-point halftime deficit and brought the game to within four in the final minutes of Friday's season-opening matchup at the Super Pit. However, the late run was not quite enough as the Mean Green fell to Houston, 46-42.

It was early foul trouble and poor shooting that led to the Mean Green loss. In what proved to be a fast-paced, back-and-forth contest in the game's opening minutes, two North Texas starters - Briesha Wynn and Acheil Tac - left the game with two fouls apiece after just eight minutes of play.

Houston would take advantage of the Mean Green bench, getting out to an 8-0 run and holding North Texas scoreless for more than seven minutes. The run held for the rest of the period as the Mean Green found itself down 31-19 at halftime.

The Mean Green spent the second half trying to battle back from the halftime deficit. Despite forcing 30 total Houston turnovers and outscoring the Cougars 23-15 in the second half, it was the Mean Green's overall 27-percent mark from the field that was too much to overcome.

"You can't miss all those layups and expect to beat a good team," head coach Mike Petersen said. "We were just soft around the rim today."

Junior Teadra Jones was one of the positive notes in the Mean Green loss. The transfer from Pensacola State College was a perfect 3-3 from the field in the first half. She ended the day with 11 points in her first regular season appearance for North Texas, going 3-5 from the field and adding 4-6 from the free throw line.

"If you're looking for a bright spot in this game, it was Teadra," Petersen added.
