OSU Second Half Run Overpowers North Texas

STILLWATER, Okla. (12/28/08)- No. 21 Oklahoma State used a big second half run to pull away from the North Texas women’s basketball team and win their sixth straight game 80-54 from Gallagher-Iba  Arena.  The Cowgirls (9-2) lead wire-to-wire but blew the game open early in the second half with an 18-2 run and never looked back.

“We just had too many mistakes today and were in a little bit of a rush on offense and you just can’t do that against a great team like Oklahoma State,” said coach Shanice Stephens.

The Cowgirls opened that game with an 8-2 run and were able to push their lead to 19-10 with 13 minutes left in the first half. The Mean Green (5-7) kept the game close in the first half but Oklahoma State used a big run of 15-6 to end the first half and take a 40-22 lead.

North Texas cut the Cowgirl lead to 14 points at 42-28 early in the second half but mistakes doomed the Mean Green. Oklahoma State forced 29 turnovers and converted those into 34 points. The Cowgirls used the Mean Green’s mistakes to make the 18-2 run and take a 66-35 lead with 7 minutes left.

The Mean Green held All-American Andrea Riley to a season-low 14 points and forced her into eight turnovers.

Amber Jackson’s streak of eight straight double-doubles came to an end as she was held to 10 points and six rebounds.

North Texas is back in action on New Year’s Eve hosting Middle Tennessee at 1 p.m. from the Super Pit.
