Mean Green Fall To The Islanders 70-58

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. (12-22-04)  - Terra Andrews scored a career-high 28 points and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi defeated the North Texas women’s basketball team 70-58 at the American Bank Center.

The loss drops the Mean Green to 5-5 on the year while the Islanders improve to 9-2 for the season.

“I think you have to give them a lot of credit tonight,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “They gave us a lot of looks tonight and we just were not able to make the stops on the defensive end when we needed too”.

The Mean Green raced out to an early 10-4 lead in the first five minutes before Texas A&M-Corpus Christi responded with an 11-0 run to take a 15-10 lead with 9:55  remaining in the first half.

North Texas closed to within two points at 17-15 three minutes later but the Islanders went on a 10-5 run to close the half and take a 27-20 to the break.

Sophomore Mia Ajekwu came out to start the second half with a flurry as she scored seven straight points and the Mean Green went on a 9-2 run in the first three minutes to trim the Islanders lead to 31-29.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi answered with a 8-3 run to extend their lead to 39-32 with 12:12 remaining.

Andrews would take over from there, scoring 18 second half points as the Mean Green never got closer than eight points in the second half.

Ajekwu finished the game with a team-high 15 points, 13 in the second half, while guard Natalie Mireles tied her career-high for a second straight game with 10 points

North Texas will return to action on December 30 at home against UTA.
