Mean Green Rally Falls Short

EDINBURG, Texas - In a game that featured nine lead changes, UTPA (5-6) was able to hold off the North Texas women's basketball team in a wild finish to win at UTPA Fieldhouse 77-74. Trailing 77-74 with 1.8 seconds left, North Texas (2-9) inbounded the ball in the entire length of the floor to Tamara Torru, she was fouled with .2 seconds remaining.

Torru missed the first free throw attempt, and her second attempt was missed intentionally in hopes of a tip in but it never came.  

The two teams traded the lead nine times in the first half and the Broncs were able to take the momentum into the half on a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Erin Lewis to make it 36-30 UTPA.

Bianca Torre, who scored a game-high 34 points, fueled an early run in the second half for UTPA as they opened up a 50-39 lead with 13 minutes left in the game.

The Mean Green kept battling back. Torru, who tied her career-high with 23 points, hit a couple of late 3-pointers.  Down 71-63 with 2 minutes left, Torru hit a 3-pointer to cut the UTPA lead to 71-66. Raquel Cuffie, who also scored a career-high 15 points, hit another 3-pointer to make it a three point game at 72-69 with 45 seconds left.

Torre hit two free throws to push the lead back to 75-69 with 37 seconds left. Torru knocked down another 3-pointer to pull North Texas to within three again at 75-72.

North Texas scored one more basket with two seconds left with to make it 76-74 and UTPA made one of two free throws to push the lead to 77-74 before the final frantic moments.

North Texas returns home to face Nicholls State on Monday night at 7 p.m.
