Kellum Scores 30 As NT Falls 90-76

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (11/23/10) - Mean Green women's basketball extended its current losing streak to three Tuesday night at Johnson Coliseum at the Bearkats of Sam Houston State sent North Texas home with a 90-76 loss.

Senior Denetra Kellum paced North Texas (1-3) with a season and career-high 30 points, shooting 11-of-23 from the field and kicking in eight free throws. Her 30 points is the most by a Mean Green player since 2009.

Five players scored in double figures for the Bearkats (3-1) led by Seequeena Thomas with 21 points and 8 rebounds.

Jasmine Godbolt, who recorded her fourth personal foul early in the second half was the only other member of the Mean Green in double figures as she poured in 14.

The Bearkats jumped out to an early lead in the first half, dumping a 16-1 run that started at the 15:27 mark and ended 4:09 later. North Texas would finish the half down 45-28.

Sam Houston would expand the lead out to 20 points with 11:59 remaining in the game before the Mean Green mounted its comeback.

Kellum shouldered the load for North Texas, scoring 17 points in the final 12 minutes and cutting down the lead to eight.

That's as close as the mean Green would get, however, as freshman Laura McCoy committed an intentional foul with 1:18 left and the Bearkats converted on both free throws and scored three points the hard way on the ensuing possession.

McCoy finished with 6 points and two of North Texas' three-pointers as she played a majority of the second half.

After a dismal three point effort on Sunday night at George Washington, the Mean Green three-point shooting woes continued against Sam Houston, only burying three of its 21 attempts, a percentage of 14.3.

North Texas women's basketball will be back in action on Friday as it kicks off the UTSA Thanksgiving classic against Davidson. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
