DENTON, Texas - The North Texas women's basketball team ushers in a new era Monday night as they open the 2012-13 season by hosting the Texas State Bobcats at the Super Pit at 7 p.m. First-year head coach Mike Petersen takes the reins of a program that won 15 games last year, the most games in a single season since 2005-06 season. North Texas returns six letterwinners from last season and three starters.

North Texas and Texas State meet for the 23rd time. Texas State leads the series with North Texas 14-8. The Mean Green blew the Bobcats out last season on the road, 61-43. The two teams were old rivals in the Southland Conference until 1996. North Texas is 5-7 at home against the Bobcats, but this will be the first visit to Denton for Texas State since the 1996.

The Mean Green has won two straight season openers after last year's 66-47 win at UTA. Season opening games have sometimes been a good barometer for how a season is going to end up. In the 15 seasons when the Mean Green has lost its season opener, they have averaged just nine wins a season. By contrast, North Texas has averaged 14 wins a year when winning its season opening game.

North Texas is 24-12 in its home openers all-time. The Mean Green has won seven of its last nine home openers and 12 of its last 15 to open the home season at the Super Pit. North Texas has won two straight home openers.

North Texas knocked down the third most 3-pointers in school history last season with 129 and junior Laura McCoy led the way with the 46, the seventh most in school history. The Mean Green in the last four seasons has notched four of the top five 3-point seasons in school history. In the last four seasons, North Texas has hit 511 3-pointers, which is more than any other stretch in school history.

The Mean Green last season had the best defensive season in school history. North Texas held its opponents to 57.7 points a game, which topped the previous school record by two points and was only the second time in school history that North Texas has held its opponents to less than 60 points for the year.
