Mean Green Women's Basketball Begins Season With Exhibition Tonight

DENTON (11/1/07)  After more than two weeks of practice the North Texas women's basketball team gets the 2007-08 season underway with its first exhibition game of the year tonight against the Houston Jaguars at 7 p.m. from the Super Pit.  The Mean Green enters the season with a roster chalk full of experience as head coach Tina Slinker has nine upperclassman on the roster.

What To Look For

Senior forward Talicia Sanders, a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference third-team pick, has a chance to etch her name into the record books this season as she will challenge the record for most rebounds in a career.

Junior Amber Jackson had a breakout season as she averaged 10.2 points a game and reached double figures in 14 games last year. Sophomore Brittney James turned in one of the most prolific seasons by a freshman in recent history. Last year James scored the most points by a North Texas freshman since the 1998-99 season.

Tonight will also mark the debut of point guard Yari Escalera. After sitting out last season because of NCAA transfer rules the junior makes her first appearance in a Mean Green uniform. Escalera was a deadly accurate 3-point shooter while at Colorado. She ranked ninth in the Big 12 in 3-point field goal percentage in 2005-06 and is 12th all-time at Colorado in 3-pointers with 54.

The Mean Green plays only one exhibition game before starting the regular season on Nov. 9, but will play another exhibition game this year on Dec. 29 against the Oklahoma Flyers.
