North Texas Women's Basketball Adds Five Players

DENTON, Texas - North Texas women's basketball coach Shanice Stephens has announced the signing of five players to National Letters of Intent today. The Mean Green has bolstered its backcourt with the addition of three guards, Kasondra Foreman, Alyssa Hankins and Desiree' Nelson, and the frontcourt with the addition of Ayoola Weaver and Jacquelyn Hearne, who measure in at 6-4 and 6-3.

"The 2010 signing period has proven to be extraordinary for the University of North Texas women's basketball program," said coach Stephens. "This is one of the most complete classes ever at North Texas.  Alyssa Hankins and Kasondra Foreman present with immediate and invaluable perimeter experience that will launch our back court into the upper echelon of the conference"

Foreman is from Weatherford Junior College, Hankins from Northern Oklahoma, Hearne from Panola College, Nelson from Copperas Cove High School, and Weaver from Central Arizona College.

Weaver was a part of the 2009 NJCAA National Championship team at Central Arizona that went 35-0 her freshman year. She averaged five points and five rebounds last season and her freshman season she scored 4.0 points and had 2.6 rebounds a game.

Foreman averaged 15.8 points, five assists, and five rebounds last season at Weatherford Junior College. She was named to the NTJCA first-team all-conference team this season and was an all-conference selection her freshman year. Foreman was fifth in the league in scoring this season as she hit on 52 percent of her shots.

Nelson was the leading scorer for Copperas Cove this year as she poured in 15.7 points a game and had three 20-point games this year. She was named the District 12-5A Defensive MVP and was an all-region selection by the TABC.

"Nelson, our lone high school recruit, joins our family as a highly decorated defensive player, whom I believe will be a force on both sides of the ball," said Stephens. "Weaver and Hearne really position our front court to be a rebounding and defending power next season."

Hankins was ninth in assists last season in NJCAA Region II, averaging just under three assists per game. She hit 37 percent from behind the arc last season.

Hearne shot 45 percent from the floor last season at Panola. She averaged four points, four rebounds and over two blocks a game. In high school at Hallsville, Hearne was a first-team all-district player and she was named to the All-Harrison and Marion Counties first-team by the Marshall News-Messenger as a senior.

The five signees join Laura McCoy of Flower Mound and Ash'Lynne Evans of Everman who signed with North Texas in the early signing period in November.
