Goodwin Named Freshman Of The Year

DENTON, Texas - The North Texas freshman duo of Loryn Goodwin and Alexis Hyder both turned in one of the best seasons in school history by freshman and today they were rewarded.

Goodwin was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and named to the third-team all-conference along with Hyder, who was also named to the third-team all-conference as the league announced its postseason awards today.

The pair is the only freshman in the conference to make any of the three all-conference teams and it is the first time since 2006 that North Texas has had multiple players on the postseason all-conference team.

Goodwin is only the third player in school history to be named Freshman of the Year, joining Jasmine Godbolt in 2010 and Freda Deckard in 1995 as the other winners.
Goodwin has broken the single season school record for most 3-pointers with 64 on the year. She is the only player in the nation this season with consecutive games of seven 3-pointers.

Goodwin hit seven 3-pointers in back-to-back games against FIU and ULM. The seven 3-pointers were the most by a freshman in school history and second all-time.  She has 83 steals on the year, which leads the Sun Belt Conference.

Hyder leads North Texas in scoring and rebounding on the year and has tied a freshman record with nine double-doubles on the year. Hyder had 18 rebounds against Arkansas State, which was the most by a player and freshman since 2005.

She leads the Sun Belt in scoring and rebounding among freshman and is the only freshman in the league to rank in the top-10 in scoring and rebounding.  Hyder can break the school record for double-doubles with one more this season.  She has scored the most points in a single season by a freshman since Jalie Mitchell in 1998-99.

North Texas opens Sun Belt Conference Tournament play in Hot Springs on Friday, March 8 with a first-round game against Louisiana-Lafayette at 2:30 p.m.
