Kellum Scores 25 Points In Loss

DENTON, Texas (2/3/11) - The Florida Atlantic women's basketball team scored 17 of the game's final 22 points to get past the Mean Green for a 64-58 win on Thursday night at the Super Pit.

The Owls improve to 6-15 and 3-7 in the Sun Belt, while the Mean Green falls to 5-19 and 2-9 in the conference. North Texas has lost its last five games. FAU takes a 3-2 lead in the series.

Denetra Kellum hit two free throws to give North Texas its final lead of the game, 56-54, with 2:56 remaining. FAU responded with a 10-2 run to take back the lead and the game.

Lyrell Barfield and Vontrice Dennis led FAU with 22 and 17 points, respectively. The duo combined for 11 of FAU's final 17 points.

Kellum returned to double-figure scoring in a big way with 25 points against the Owls. Her 13-game streak of scoring in double-figures was cut short last game against Denver, but she started a new one against FAU. Kellum has scored in double-figures in 21 of 24 games.

North Texas opened the second half with a 17-7 run to take a 42-40 run. Kellum and Godbolt combined for 15 of NT's 17 points. Following two Godbolt free throws, North Texas held its largest lead of the game, 53-47 with 4:55 left in the game.

Barfield scored five straight points to tie the game at 54 with 3:12 on the clock. Kellum gave the lead back to North Texas one more time with two free throws, but Barfield responded with two free throws of her own to tie the game again, 56-56. Takia Brooks hit a layup to hand the lead back to FAU for good.

FAU shot 41 percent from the field, compared to NT's 33 percent shooting. The Owls also hit four three-pointers, while North Texas was held to just one.

Kellum scored 10 of NT's opening 16 points. Following a Kasondra Foreman jumper that put the Mean Green ahead 6-2, Kellum scored the next six straight points.

With NT ahead, 12-6, FAU picked up the pace with a 21-8 run to take a 27-20 lead. The Owls entered half ahead, 33-28.

On the FAU side, Lyrell Barfield scored 15 of the Owls 33 half-time points. She hit both of FAU's three-pointers in the first period.
