DENTON, Texas (2/3/10) - Despite five players scoring in double-digits, the Mean Green women's basketball team was unable to slow down Lyrell Barfield and the rest of the FAU Owls, falling 94-76 Wednesday evening at The Super Pit.

After trailing by only a point at halftime, North Texas was outscored 52-35 in the second half and allowed the Owls to shoot 68 percent from the field in those 20 minutes. Barfield was the story for the Owls, scoring a game-high 24 points, 17 of which came in the second half. She was joined by 18 points from Teri Stamps, 17 from Jessica Knurick and 14 by Brittany Bowe.

North Texas (6-17, 3-9) did outscore FAU 28-14 off the bench, but their downfall once again was 21 turnovers that the Owls converted into 32 points.

FAU (11-11, 7-5) did most of their damage at the free throw line where they shot 22-of-27, including 15-of-17 in the final half.

Brittany James led the Mean Green in scoring with 19 points, but shot only 8-of-20 from the field and 1-of-5 at the free throw line. Jasmine Raquel Cuffie and Denetra Kellum each chipped in 12 points and Ravven Brown and Jasmine Godbolt put in 10.

The Mean Green struggled offensively in the early going but made up for their struggles with a critical 15-6 run over the final five minutes to close the gap to 42-41 going into halftime. Brown, who came into Wednesday with a season-high three points, exploded in the first half with a team-high 10 points and 2-of-2 from three-point territory.

Also contributing off the bench in the first half was freshman Cuffie, who scored eight points on 3-of-3 shooting.

As a team North Texas shot 47 percent from the field in the first half and committed only eight turnovers compared to 52 percent shooting from FAU. Teri Stamps came off the bench for the Owls in the opening half and matched her season-high with 12 points in the first 20 minutes.

North Texas will next hit the road for a showdown with FIU on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m.
