Last-Second Shot By Armstrong Lifts NT to 53-51 Win Over USA

MOBILE, Ala. (1/31/04) -- Sophomore forward Jamie Armstrong scored with 1.9 seconds remaining to lift the North Texas (8-11, 4-3) women's basketball team to a 53-51 victory over South Alabama (15-4, 4-3) at the Mitchell Center.

The win now vaults the Mean Green into a three-way tied atop the Sun Belt Conference West Division standings with South Alabama and Louisiana-Lafayette.

"That was a big shot at the end by Jamie," said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. "We were used Jill Medlock as a decoy and we were able to get the ball down into the hands of Jamie and it worked out".

Armstrong ended the night with 14 points and eight rebounds. The Mean Green set up the final play with 7.2 seconds remaining after Whitney Woodard for South Alabama tied the game at 51-51 with a lay-up with 16 seconds left. On the final play Medlock feed the ball into Armstrong in the post and she was able to back her defender down and scored from five-feet away. Armstrong closed the game out with a steal and ran out the remaining 1.9 seconds on the clocked to seal the victory.

North Texas led for virtually the entire game in a defensive struggle. The Mean Green took a 24-21 lead into the break and came out in the second half and appeared to pull away from the Jaguars. North Texas gained their largest lead of the game at 47-36 on a basket by Medlock with 4:46 to go. South Alabama made one final push with a 15-4 run over the final four minutes to tie the score up at 51-51 before Armstrong's heroics.

"I think that we really understand their offense. For us to find a way to win on the road against a team that has won 15 games feels really good" Slinker said.

For the second straight season North Texas becomes the first team to win at the Mitchell Center this year. The Mean Green has now won three of their last four games on the road since the 2001-02 season. Kim Blanton collected her third double-double on the season with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mean Green close out their three-game road trip against Louisiana-Lafayette on February 5 at the Cajundome.
