DENTON (1/17/02) After trailing by three points at halftime, North Texas (10-6, 4-2) came back to defeat Denver (8-10, 4-2) 77-68 in Sun Belt women’s basketball at the Super Pit Thursday night.

After shooting just 39 percent from the field in the first half, the Lady Eagles shot 50 percent during the final 20 minutes to improve their record to 10-6 for the season and 4-2 in Sun Belt Conference games.

“We did a great job overall on the defensive end of the floor and we hit the boards really hard in the second half,” North Texas head coach Tina Slinker said. “I was really pleased with the way we kept attacking. Our post players played very well.”

North Texas senior Jalie Mitchell eclipsed the 20-point mark for the fifth straight game with a game-high 22 while Shannan Stephenson added 21. Senior guard Rosalyn Reades became the school’s all-time steals leader with her four swipes in the game, giving her 264 for her career.

“We sometimes don’t talk about Rosalyn a lot, but she is a big part of our success,” Slinker said. “It was great the way she got that final steal on our home court late in the game.”

Denver stayed in the game with 12 three-point field goals. Three Pioneer players had four three pointers each.

With the win, North Texas is now is now in a two-way tie for first place in the Sun Belt’s West Division with a 4-2 record along with Denver. The Lady Eagles play at Middle Tennessee Jan. 19 before returning home Jan. 24 against Louisiana Lafayette.
