Cougars Coming to the Super Pit for 2014-15 Season Opener

Luckily for head coach Mike Petersen's Mean Green, they feel comfortable in a high-paced game. That means North Texas could be in for a track meet in its opening game of the 2014-15 season against Houston, which takes place November 14 at 7 p.m at the Super Pit.
"We don't have a problem playing quickly," he said, with a qualifier. "But we don't wanna get sped up to the point where we're not valuing the ball."
In the Mean Green's 75-74 exhibition win over Southern Arkansas November 6, Petersen was pleased with how his team responded from the beginning of the second half.
"From the second half on, I thought we did a great job of valuing the ball," the head coach evaluated. "We only had seven turnovers in the second half and overtime [combined], which was very good."
Senior Joh'Vonna Darrington - who scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds and led the team with four steals - expects North Texas to learn from their overtime victory over the Muleriders and move forward against the Cougars.
"We had a few ups and downs, like letting them come back after we had a 10-point lead," Darrington said. "But I think we can learn from it being a close game; we were able to stable ourselves and compose ourselves and work as a team."
Darrington and Eboniey Jeter were a force down low against Southern Arkansas, as Jeter notched 26 points and 12 rebounds of her own. If it were a regular-season game, the 26 points would have been a career-high for the redshirt sophomore.
With Petersen beginning his third season with the Mean Green, Houston's Ronald Hughey is set to make his head coaching debut. His job with the Cougars comes after spending 10 years as assistant coach at various programs, most recently with Florida State from 2012-14.
