DENTON - Despite holding a first-half lead, North Texas was unable to keep up with the Minutewomen in the second period, as UMass defeated the Mean Green, 56-46, on Friday night in the Super Pit.

North Texas' shooting woes continued as they shot 33 percent from the field in the game. They also struggled rebounding, with UMass holding a 47-25 advantage. North Texas only had three second-chance points, largely due to UMass's 31 defensive rebounds.

"We got badly, badly, badly, badly out-toughed down the stretch," said North Texas head coach Mike Petersen. "We got outrebounded by twenty-two, and that's a problem, and so we've just got to get tougher there."

In the second period, UMass pushed ahead of North Texas with a 13-5 run, giving UMass a five-point lead, 44-39 with 5:54 left in the game. UMass' Emily Mital hit the Minutewomen's only two 3-pointers in the game during that run.

The Mean Green had foul trouble with three of their starters, who all fouled out in the second period. UMass sealed the win by hitting six free-throws down the stretch.

"We had some foul trouble," said Petersen. "We had some different line-ups out there and some people who haven't been in those situations before and that hurt us a little bit."

North Texas started off hot with Briesha Wynn scoring the team's first seven points of the game. The Mean Green held an 18-6 led over UMass, keeping UMass to only one field goal in the first ten minutes of play. UMass came back with a 15-2 run, leaving North Texas up 23-21 at the end of the first half.

Wynn led two players in double-figures. Eboniey Jeter chipped in ten points. UMass's Kim Pierre-Louis led all scorers with a total of 18 points.
