Public Access Defibrillator Program (PAD)

The University Of North Texas recognizes there is a potential for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) to faculty, staff, students, and visitors on the University Of North Texas campus. SCA can happen anywhere, anytime. SCA is usually caused by an electrical malfunction that makes the heart quiver ineffectively. CPR is not enough. It is a temporary measure that helps maintain blood flow to the brain. A lifesaving pulse of electricity, defibrillation, is the only treatment and must be delivered quickly to restore the heart's normal rhythm. Because every minute counts when SCA strikes, the University Of North Texas is placing automated external defibrillators (AED's) in key locations around the campus. These AED's can be used by anyone with proper training.

An AED is used to treat victims who experience SCA. It is only to be applied to victims who are unconscious, not breathing, and show no signs of circulation such as normal breathing, coughing and movement. The AED will analyze the heart rhythm and advise the operator if a shockable rhythm is detected. If a shockable rhythm is detected, the AED will charge to the appropriate energy level and advise the operator a shock is being delivered.
