Prateek Kalakuntla, from Plano, was the sixth Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science student selected for the national finals of the annual Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. He received fourth place for synthesizing a substance to detect mercury and other toxins in water.

The Siemens Competition is one of the nation’s premier research competitions for high school-aged students. Prateek Kalakunta will now compete for a $3,000 scholarship and a spot in the finals up the competition.

Three students from UNT's Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science were named regional finalists in the 2015 Siemens Competition. UNT's TAMS program had more regional finalists and semifinalists than any other school in Texas.
