A Year in Military Health

During December, the Military Health System offers a look back at the highlights of 2016. The Military Health System experienced many changes and achievements in 2016.

  • We began 2016 fighting the invisible enemy of vector-borne diseases worldwide.
  • We raised public awareness about the health benefits of tobacco-free living, mental health resources for military members and the power of one person to recognize the warning signs of suicide and intervene to save another person's life.
  • We continue to lead innovation in trauma care, rehabilitation, prosthetics and regenerative medicine.
  • We launched a new Drug Take Back Program at military pharmacies across the U.S.
  • We are wrapping up the year by implementing the first of many benefit changes for mental health and substance use disorder.

Among the many historic milestones in 2016 was the change in leadership in the Military Health System and the Defense Health Agency. Throughout it all, we've remained on the cutting edge of medical research and development and maintained an agile, fully-deployable medical force capable of meeting the complex and ever changing demands of military medicine in the 21st century.
