On May 3, 2016, the National Academy of Sciences elected 84 new members and 21 foreign members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Election to the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, or National Academy of Medicine is considered one of the highest professional honors among scientists, engineers, and health professionals. Each year, new members are elected by current members based on outstanding achievement and commitment to service.  The National Academy of Sciences membership consists of approximately 2,200 members and 420 foreign associates, each of whom is affiliated with one of 31 disciplinary sections. The National Academy of Medicine has more than 1,800 members and foreign associates. The National Academy of Engineering has more than 2,000 peer-elected members and foreign associates. More than 300 NAS, NAE, and NAM members are Nobel laureates. The National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation have been awarded to more than 250 of our members.

Biographical Memoirs are brief biographies of influential National Academy of Sciences members such as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and Margaret Mead. Written by those who knew them or their work, these biographies provide a personal and scholarly view of the lives and work of America's most distinguished scientists and a biographical history of science in the United States. The National Academy of Engineering has published 12 volumes of memorial tributes to deceased members; the publications can be found on www.nap.edu.

 Each year more than 6,000 experts, including Academy members, serve as volunteers on hundreds of study committees that examine some of society's most pressing issues. The results of their efforts frequently form the basis of public policies for decades to come.
In addition, members of our standing committees, roundtables, and groups such as the Presidents' Circle provide leadership, guidance, and support in many areas.

Member to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom
Nov. 16, 2016 - NAS/NAE/NAM member Richard Garwin was one of 21 people named by President Obama to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor.
NAM Elects 79 New Members
Oct. 17, 2016 - The National Academy of Medicine announced the names of 70 new members and nine international members during its 46th annual meeting.
NAS Member Shares 2016 Nobel in Economics
Oct. 10, 2016 - The 2016 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded jointly to National Academy of Sciences member Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmström "for their contributions to contract theory."
NAS Member Shares 2016 Nobel in Chemistry
Oct. 5, 2016 - The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016 was awarded jointly to National Academy of Sciences member J. Fraser Stoddart, Jean-Pierre Sauvage, and Bernard L. Feringa "for the design and synthesis of molecular machines."
NAS Member Shares 2016 Nobel in Physics
Oct. 4, 2016 - The Nobel Prize in Physics 2016 was divided, one-half awarded to National Academy of Sciences member David J. Thouless, the other half jointly to F. Duncan M. Haldane and J. Michael Kosterlitz "for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter."

May 3, 2016 - The National Academy of Sciences elected 84 new members and 21 foreign associates from 14 countries in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
NAE Elects New Members
Feb. 8, 2016 - The National Academy of Engineering has elected 80 new members and 22 foreign members, bringing the total U.S. membership to 2,275 and foreign members to 232.
