News NJVOAD published the New Jersey Non-Profit Long Term Recovery Assessment four years after Hurricane Sandy deals a devastating blow to tens of thousands of New Jersey's residents. This assessment provides an overview of the impact of non-profit contributions as well as lessons learned and recommendations for future disaster response and recovery. Many NJVOAD member organizations are supporting Hurricane Matthew relief efforts in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Residents in those impacted communities will need the right kind of help and support to recover. If you want to help, the best way is through financial donations; please don't contribute to the secondary disaster as detailed in this STORY. NJVOAD was invited to provide testimony before the House Committee on Homeland Security's Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communication on "A Prepared Community is a Resilient Community." NJVOAD was honored on May 23, 2016 at the National VOAD Conference in Minneapolis MN., and received the 2016 State VOAD of the Year Award for significant contributions to the National VOAD Movement! Mission NJVOAD’s mission is to bring together New Jersey organizations active in disaster assistance, and to foster cooperation and coordination in preparedness, response, and recovery in order to offer more effective services to people and communities affected by disaster. |

What is VOAD? The foundation of the VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) movement is relationships. VOAD builds partnerships to improve outcomes for people and communities affected by disasters by facilitating cooperation, communication, coordination and collaboration among nonprofit organizations, community-based groups, government agencies and for-profit companies. NJVOAD is a statewide partnership of organizations and entities that respond to disaster as part of their overall mission. Membership in VOAD provides the benefit of accumulated expertise of local, regional and national partners to deliver more effective and efficient response services. Interested in joining? NJVOAD is partnering with public sector, private sector and non-profit organizations to identify or create resources and systems which support all phases of the disaster cycle. One recent example is HELPNJNOW.ORG. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, tens of thousands of individuals reached out to help, but there was no consolidated resource to capture all of the ways people could assist. HELPNJNOW.ORG was designed to connect resources with up to date community needs in order to best respond to disasters. This site was built and is maintained by a partnership between New Jersey Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NJVOAD), the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM) and the Governor’s Office of Volunteerism through the generous support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the PSEG Foundation.
