Large increases in #HIV suppression are needed to reduce new infections among men who have sex with men (MSM), according to a new mathematical model based on data from Baltimore presented today at #HIVR4P2016. Researchers performed the modeling as part of a clinical study funded by NIAID and the National Institute of Mental Health that aims to assess an HIV prevention strategy that includes identifying MSM living with HIV who are not virally suppressed, getting them into care, and helping them achieve and maintain viral suppression. Sustained viral suppression is essential both for individual health and to reduce HIV transmission within the community.

Achieving moderate reduction of new HIV infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) will depend on significantly increasing the percentage of HIV-infected MSM whose viral load is suppressed to undetectable levels, according to a new mathematical model based on data from Baltimore. Access and adherence to antiretroviral therapy are key to sustained HIV suppression, which dramatically reduces the risk of transmitting HIV to others.

A team led by NIAID scientists has identified a genetic explanation for a syndrome characterized by frustrating and difficult-to-treat symptoms, including skin flushing and itching, gastrointestinal complaints, and joint problems. Identifying this genetic change, which might underlie health issues that affect a substantial number of people, opens the door for future development of potential diagnosis and treatment strategies.
Scientists at the National Institutes of Health have identified a genetic explanation for a syndrome characterized by multiple frustrating and difficult-to-treat symptoms, including dizziness and lightheadedness, skin flushing and itching, gastrointestinal complaints, chronic pain, and bone and joint problems. Some people who experience these diverse symptoms have elevated levels of tryptase—a protein in the blood often associated with allergic r...

Results from an NIAID-funded study suggest that the composition of microbial communities and the related microbe-associated metabolites in the gut of very young infants contribute to their risk of developing allergies and asthma during childhood. The findings eventually may help advance development of early-life interventions to prevent allergies and allergic diseases.

The microbial communities, or microbiota, that naturally colonize the digestive tract in very young infants can affect their risk of later developing childhood allergies and asthma. Scientists now have identified a specific type of microbiota composition and corresponding metabolic environment in the neonatal gut that appears to influence immune cell populations and promote allergy and asthma development. The work was funded by the National Insti...
