What's behind our cooktop & wall oven Ratings?

Experts at our National Testing and Research Center tested 65 models in cooktops & wall ovens to see which ones perform best.
We look for:
  • Overall score
Overall score reflects cooktop performance at high and low heat, as well as safety issues such as surface temperature. The displayed score is out of a total of 100 points.
  • High heat
Reflects how quickly the highest-powered element heated water to near-boiling.
  • Low heat
Reflects how well the lowest-powered element or burner kept a low temperature as for melting chocolate and how the most powerful element, set to low, held tomato sauce below a boil.

Swapping a range for a cooktop and wall oven is appealing. The look is modern and you have some flexibility where you install the appliances. Place the wall oven at a height that works for you, making it easier to reach in and eliminating bending. But the cooktop-wall oven combo is more expensive than most ranges. Our ratings include electric smoothtop, induction, and gas cooktops. Electric wall ovens are the big sellers so that's what we test and you'll see single oven and double oven in our ratings. Consumer Reports offers you buying advice that you can trust. We provide unbiased ratings and reviews to help you choose the best appliance for your needs and budget.
