Fishery-Independent Survey
A fishery-independent survey is a systematic sampling project carried out by research vessels or contracted commercial fishing vessels for gathering biological or environmental information, primarily focused on commercial fish or protected species for stock assessments.
Fishery-Independent Survey System (FINSS)
FINSS is a national system that characterizes NMFS ocean observation activities and data collection during fishery-independent surveys, and provides up-to-date information to fishery scientists, managers and the public through digital mapping and tabular reporting applications.

Effective July 1, 2005, all dealers importing, exporting, or re-exporting bluefin tuna, swordfish, southern bluefin tuna and frozen bigeye tuna must hold a Highly Migratory Species International Trade Permit (HMS ITP) and follow the required reporting procedures established at 50 C.F.R. 300.183 through 300.187.
The Prescott Stranding Grant Program is conducted by the Secretary of Commerce to provide grants or cooperative agreements for eligible stranding network participants for (1) recovery or treatment of marine mammals, (2) collection of data from living or dead stranded marine mammals for scientific research regarding marine mammal health and (3) for facilities operations costs that are directly related to these purposes.
