Passing of Bo Lindell, 5th Scientific Secretary and 8th Chairman of ICRP

Bo Lindell passed away peacefully at the age of 94 in Stockholm, Sweden, on November 10, 2016.

Bo was a giant in radiological protection.

He was Director of SSI, the predecessor of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten, from 1965-1982, and a member of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) from 1965-1988.

He served as ICRP Scientific Secretary from 1957-1962, the 5^th to hold the post and the first Swede. He was a member of the Main Commission since 1962, during which time he served as a member of Committee 4 (1962-1965), Chairman of Committee 3 (1965-1977), ICRP Vice-Chairman (1969-1977) under Rolf Sievert and Sir Eric Pochin, and then as the 8^th ICRP Chairman (1977-1985). Upon leaving his position of ICRP Chairman, he was appointed for life as an Emeritus Member of the Main Commission, an honourary distinction in appreciation of extraordinary contributions to ICRP.

Few have had such a long and illustrious role in ICRP. Among his many important contributions, he played a central role in the development of the 1977 Recommendations of the ICRP (ICRP Publication 26). These recommendations laid out the fundamental structure of the system of radiological protection still used today.

Bo also played a key role in the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA). He was elected to the first IRPA Executive Council in 1966, serving two terms until 1973.

To mark his passing, for the first time an excerpt of an interview of Bo Lindell conducted in May 2012 as part of the ICRP Oral History Project has been released.

More Japanese Translations of ICRP Publications Now Available

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Japan Radioisotope Association, with Nishina Memorial Foundation in early days, many ICRP publications have been translated into Japanese, going as far back as ICRP Publication 1 in 1958. This has been a great resource, giving Japanese readers access to the publications in their native language.

Now, an additional 22 Japanese translations (of Publications 65, 68, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 91, 92, 93, 94, 97, 98, 101 part 1, and 101 part 2) have been added to www.icrp.org, bringing the total number to 73; by far the most translations into any single language.

Translations of selected ICRP publications are also available in: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Romanian, Russian, and Spanish.

ICRP Welcomes New Intern: Trent Peerla-Proulx

Thanks to the kind support of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), ICRP has a full-time, fully funded intern position which allows the ICRP Scientific Secretariat to work more effectively, and also provides an excellent learning opportunity for the incumbents. Trent Peerla-Proulx is a university student in the CNSC’s co-op program, placed with the ICRP Scientific Secretariat for four months. ICRP is financed primarily through voluntary contributions from organisations with an interest in radiological protection. The CNSC is one of several national and international organisations that provide annual financial support. ICRP also relies heavily on in-kind support including CNSC providing an office for the Scientific Secretariat located in Ottawa, Canada.

Since 1928, International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has developed and maintained the International System of Radiological Protection used world-wide as the basis for radiological protection standards, legislation, guidelines, programmes, and practice. Our work is sustained through the generous support of numerous international organisations and agencies.

Reporting to the Scientific Secretary, the Development and Communications Manager will implement an existing fund-raising plan, develop and deliver an internal/external communications plan, and oversee the stewardship of stakeholder relationships. The role will also incorporate administrative and financial management responsibilities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

previous success in fund-raising
an understanding of strategic communications
strong organisational and multi-tasking abilities
familiarity with ICRP’s work and priorities
