October is domestic violence awareness month. Nearly half of domestic violence occurrences are against males, yet most don't report the abuse. Those that do seek help are often met with disbelief, are mocked, or accused as attackers themselves.

A map is a diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads and a compass is an instrument for determining directions as by means of a freely rotating magnetized needle that indicates magnetic north. "Chart your course to distant horizons with knowledge that many hands make light work and clearer vision is gained when everybody is aware of the progress with their eyes set firmly on the destination," said Col. Matthew T. Fritz, 92nd Air Refueling Wing vice commander. (U.S. Air Force Photo/Senior Airman Nick J. Daniello) Are you missing your chance to make history?
You may not know this, but Christopher Columbus almost sailed right past his chance to make the history books in his 1492 landing in the “New World.” Had his ship sailed yet one day longer without sighting land, they would have turned around and headed back to Spain on the 12th of October.

It’s 4 p.m. on a Monday afternoon and you’ve hurt your back carrying a bag of groceries up the stairs. Or it’s Sunday morning and your child wakes up with a fever and a sore throat. More often than not, medical concerns seemingly arise out of nowhere. When it’s after normal clinic hours, what is the best option for medical care? Walk-in clinics, Urgent Care Clinics and Emergency Departments all provide after-hours care, but understanding the differences in levels of care, and the costs that can be incurred, can be overwhelming.

(Courtesy photo) Mission first, people always
“Mission first, people always.” This saying, or some variation of it, is common throughout the Air Force as a direction for good leadership. I admit, as a young NCO I often scoffed at it. I tend to look at things mathematically. If I’m going to dedicate myself 100 percent to the mission, how can I always do what’s right for my people and their families 100 percent of the time? The answer is, of course, you can’t, but as I have progressed through my career I have gained a progressively better understanding of this phrase and how to apply it.
