But around the world, millions of children bear marks they have not chosen: the physical and psychological scars of violence. Violence against children marks them forever. Together, we must end it.

The slap of an upset parent, the sexual advance by a neighbour or relative, bullying from other classmates at school. Children are victims of violence every day, everywhere.

Every five minutes a child dies as a result of violence. Millions more children live in fear of physical, emotional and sexual violence.

All children have the potential to be happy, healthy and successful. But witnessing or experiencing violence erodes that potential and affects a child’s health, wellbeing and future. The effects can stay with them for life.

Ending violence against children is everybody’s business.

Too many people turn a blind eye to violence against children. And too many children who experience violence don’t have the confidence and the means to speak out, to tell a trusted adult, to find a safe space.

Everybody can play a role in ensuring children have a healthy, safe and secure environment that protects them from violence and exploitation. Violence against children is widespread but it can be prevented.

Silence is not an option. If you see violence against a child and do nothing, you are telling that child that what is happening to her or him is okay. It’s not okay – the time to speak up is now.

Ending violence against children is everybody’s business.

An army of volunteers in Swaziland are helping child victims of abuse and letting them know they are not alone.
Life skills

Girls and boys in Malawi are learning crucial skills to help prevent sexual violence from ever occurring.

Proteja Brasil (Protect Brazil) app allows users to report cases of violence against children. Reporting triggers a response from the law enforcement and child protection authorities. In 2015, the authorities reported receiving through the hotline more than 80,000 complaints – nine cases every hour.
UNICEF supports a government programme by training teachers on how to prevent violence against children. By November 2016, around 172 primary schools, 1,600 teachers and 250 school directors have been reached. Around 51,145 students, including 23,423 girls, benefited.
UNICEF and Muslim and Christian leaders are tackling the issue together. A first-ever joint publication brings together perspectives from Egypt’s two main faiths on protecting children from violence. Around 850 imams and priests are being trained to address violence against children.
The government and UNICEF launched a family outreach service to support marginalized families in improving child safety and reducing neglect and violence against a child in the family. Progress has been achieved in 80 per cent of the families.
A UNICEF-supported programme works with communities to prevent gender-based violence. In one community, a woman who had been a FGM practitioner renounced the practice and promised to protect her granddaughters – read her and others’ testimonials.
