The men of Col. Josiah Bissell’s Engineer Regiment of the West stand in formation. Formed in 1861 of men from Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri, the unit performed arduous service during the Vicksburg campaign excavating canals, corduroying roads and building bridges.

Jose Sanchez, director of Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, presents a service award to ERDC’s Dr. Lyn Hales, program manager for Monitoring Completed Navigation Projects, for 55 years of service to the nation Oct. 12. Hales was also presented with a Bronze de Fleury Medal from the Army Engineer Association for a lifetime of outstanding service and mentorship.

Capt. Frederick E. Prime: Born in Italy on Sept. 24, 1829, Prime graduated at the top of the West Point Class of 1850. He spent his pre-war career building fortifications along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Elevated to captain at the outbreak of hostilities, Prime was wounded and captured in the Battle of Mill Springs, Kentucky, on Dec. 5, 1861. Following his exchange in the spring of 1862, he was assigned as chief engineer on Grant’s staff.

Battlefield at Chickasaw Bayou: The Walnut Hills, north of Vicksburg, was the objective of Sherman’s attack at Chickasaw Bayou. But the bravery of Union soldiers could not overcome the strength of the Confederate position or the determined resistance offered by the men in gray.

Confederate Brig. Gen. Stephen D. Lee: Brig. Gen. Stephen D. Lee had tactical command of Confederate forces at Chickasaw Bayou. In the aftermath of civil war, Lee served as a state senator in Mississippi, was first president of what is now Mississippi State University, and became the first chairman of the Vicksburg National Military Park Commission.

Confederate Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton: Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton, the Pennsylvanian in gray who commanded the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, remained in Vicksburg while fighting raged along the banks of Chickasaw Bayou north of the city.
