Gerardo I. Velazquez, a research civil engineer in the Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, has been awarded the 2016 Great Minds in STEM Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corp.’s Professional Achievement Award in Civil Engineering.

Engineer Research and Development Center volunteers joined fellow judges and evaluated more than 200 science fair projects at Mississippi’s Bovina Elementary School Feb. 4- 5 in such categories as chemistry, botany, physics, engineering, computer science and mathematics.  ERDC Education Outreach Coordinator Rick Tillotson, left, and Environment Laboratory’s Dr. Jonathon Brame scored projects for creative ability, scientific thought, thoroughness, skill and clarity. Brame recently starred in the Vicksburg Theater Guild’s production of “Mary Poppins” in the role of Bert, the chimney sweeper.

Norberto Nadal-Caraballo, Ph.D., was selected as the 2015 winner of the Great Minds in STEM™, Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference (HENAAC) Professional Achievement Award in Civil Engineering August 7.
 
Nadal-Caraballo, a research civil engineer in the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center's Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, developed statistical methodologies ("StormSim" software system) to characterize the flood risk for multiple areas in the United States.
